Novell Linux, Mac, PC
Novell Marketing Video for Linux playing on the popular Mac vs PC videos.
What is Linux? See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux
Some points for Linux off the top of my head:
- Free (as in speech). I have the freedom to tweak the system as I wish.
- DRM Free
- Superior method of software updates, installation
- Solid stability (servers I run have been up for 1+yrs, my desktop 1+ month)
- Can scale down to very old/obscure hardware (I have a Linux file server running an old 266, 24MB ram
- Virtually Spyware/Virus free
- Variety of system tools not available in Windows. Extensive programming interface.
- Very cool eye-candy ahead of other Operating systems. Youtube search “compiz”, see the upcoming KDE, see the current version of Gnome.
- I know exactly what my computer is doing. Can’t say the same thing with Windows, OS X
- Although I agree gaming is lacking, I personally don’t game on PC but what I do see is the amazing benefit of being able to have access to the thousands of OSS packages out there.
- Luxury of using technology backed up by contributions and usage by companies such as IBM, HP, Sun, Google, many governments, military orgs, NASA, universities, super computer research. Outside the desktop Windows presence is not the greatest.
- Constant updates to all my software. You can choose to run cutting edge or run stable.
- Ability to decide what to install and what not to (can’t say the same thing about XP)
- Freedom of not depending on one single vendor. I know my needs will not be put aside by the needs of a corporation anytime soon.
- Decades of solid tested UNIX (like) technology (see OS X benefits, not XP though)
- The ability take a part in the development process of the OS I use.
- Oh, did I mention it’s free as in beer?

Ubuntu is a Linux …
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. Linux comes in different “flavors” called distributions (eg. Ubuntu, Suse, Slackware, Fedora, etc). Ubuntu is one of the most popular ones because of its ease of use. You usually don’t get or install Linux on its own (unless we are talking about the standalone kernel but that’s a different story) – you install one of the many available distributions by picking one that matches your needs. So when you install Ubuntu, for all practical purposes, have installed Linux

i kno they are …
i kno they are pretty similar but is linux better or ubuntu
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
it’s not the OS …
it’s not the OS that sucks but the user

Its unfortunate my …
Its unfortunate my DVR from my cable co died or I would post the video .. I was watching the NASA channel one night of ISS and yes… in space on ISS this guy got a blue screen.. SWEAR TO IT. He threw up his hands, funny .

Yep, i can imagine …
Yep, i can imagine the NASA people trying to save send coordinates to a space shuttle when suddenly a BSoD appears… lol. Then they have to wait until Monday to get the Miscrosoft Technician to come to NASA

Well put.
Well put.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
I dunno, is it …
I dunno, is it wrong to want to bang Linux? I’m confused people.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Yea Linux sucks so …
Yea Linux sucks so bad.. Sucks so bad that I make $100k a year as a sysadmin… sucky Linux.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
You dont need to …
You dont need to reverse-engineer Linux because the source code is already freely open. Yes, unlike windows or mac.

thats the TRUTH. …
thats the TRUTH. and calling MS costs money, wastes HOURS of times and usually they can’t fix a thing that goes wrong. not to mention they’ve been outsourced to India so i have a realllllly hard time understanding the accents
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Indeed, I have yet …
Indeed, I have yet to meet a problem that can’t be fixed from visiting a Linux forum.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
I heard NASA uses …
I heard NASA uses Linux because it can be reverse-engineered, unlike Windows or Mac.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
And those companies …
And those companies are not exempt from making mistakes either. I do not know anyone who has ever called MS for support (as opposed to merely the computer manufacturer for support even if unrelated to hardware problems). Support received from places like Ubuntu forums has been better than any I’ve ever received from such provided by manufacturers. Such manufacturers provide the same support they would for Windows or Mac OS.

AGREED!!
AGREED!!
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Thanks for pointing …
.
Thanks for pointing out those apps = VERY helpful
However you just proved my point. Not all new users to Linux even understand those commands they read on IRC/Forums (Fedora Forums)? I’ve already learned bad things to enter in shell that screwed stability or the kernel back in the FC2-4 days because of such forums. My point is those Genius’ or M$ support lines aren’t the only places to go. however help is easily understood & to follow. Giving commands can be dangerous if one makes a mistake
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
I think they are …
I think they are sellouts because of the agreement with M$, nothing good can come out of that, M$ isn’t exactly known for their honest intention. Please disregard my last message, it’s good to know you are a true Linux user.
And Happy New Year
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
I don’t know what …
I don’t know what you mean by sellout. But… We have been using Suse since 2003 and never had any problems. As soon as we started dealing with Novell everything went to . It is not that they are just incompetent. They act like they invented GNU/Linux.
All of our newly deployed enterprise servers as well as desktop clients are using RedHat. They have been much easier to deal with.

AHAHAHAHAHHAH LINUX …
AHAHAHAHAHHAH LINUX SUCKS
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Oh whatever… I …
Oh whatever… I use a pc. Those who claim, that Vista, XP, Mac OS X, Linux or any operating a system is bad, you should realize that nowadays That is not the point. You can get all of them installed for free. Do your homework. Download them and just do your task for Christ sake already. People, open your eyes, don’t pay for operating systems
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
You claim to have …
You claim to have been using Linux for 12 years. Then I sincerely hope you don’t like Novell. They are the biggest sellouts in the Linux community.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
BTW…. I have been …
BTW…. I have been using Linux for about 12 years. So please spare us the self righteous banter. It is painfully apparent that you and hossrex are both Windos troll wags as it seems to me you are attaching mac users in general. My guess is that you stumbled onto GNU/Linux about 5 minutes ago. In my book that makes you fair game. I think you and hossrex owe the Linux user community and youtube an apology. baring that… Go yourself.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Go yourself …
Go yourself hole… If you and hossrex are indicative of the drooling retards that are using Linux then I would say the platform is doomed. But, since both of you are Windos trolls I guess both of you are a good match for the circle jerk that is Microsoft. Like I said… Go read the original posts before you shoot your moronic mouth off.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
So, is it possible …
So, is it possible for you to write a post without being insulting?
My good man, please stop using Linux, I don’t want people like you to advocate it. It gives the rest of us a bad name. Judging from your comments, the Mac community will more than gladly accept you
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
haha nice
haha nice
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Actually, hossrex …
Actually, hossrex claims to be a Linux user but is actually a Windos troll that thinks Windos is more open than OSX (BSD) and Liniux is not ready for the mainstream. I suggest you go back and read his posts before you mouth off. Unless of coarse you enjoy shoving you nose up his in which case go right ahead and continue to do so.
